Professor Emeritus Paul Kleintjes, Ph.D.


Biography
  

Paul Leo Kleintjes was born June 4, 1916 in Auburn, New York. After graduation from Auburn Senior High School in 1934, he attended the Emergency Collegiate Center at Auburn and the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse until 1938. He transferred to Oswego State Teachers College and graduated with a B.S. in Education in 1940. He taught Industrial Arts in Hamilton New York high school until he enlisted in the Army Air Forces in November, 1941. He was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers and served as company commander of an engineer general service company in both the European and Pacific theatres until he was relieved from active duty in February 1946. Upon return to civilian state, he joined the International Harvester Company as a methods improvement investigator but left this position shortly to implement the organization and teaching of a program in Transportation at the State University of New York at Oswego (SUNY). He received his M.A. degree from Ohio State University in 1947 and his Doctorate at Penn state University in 1953. He was a member of Iota Lambda Sigma, Phi Delta Kappa, a laureate member of Epsilon Pi Tau and the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni award from SUNY Oswego in 1987.

He married the former Jean E. Hickok of Auburn in 1946. They have a son and four daughters, two of whom have Doctorates and three with Master's degrees. They also have three grandchildren. Dr. Kleintjes accepted a position in the department of Industrial Arts in 1954 at CSULB and was appointed Chairman of the Department of Industrial Technology in 1960. He was a master model-maker for several Naval Architectural firms in Long Beach during his tenure at CSULB. He retired from the University as Professor Emeritus in July 1979.

He also retired from active reserve duty in 1976 as a Lt. Colonel with twenty-five years total military service. He received a Bronze Star during the Battle of the Buldge from General Patton personally and has five battle stars from the ETO, the Phillipine Liberation Medal and the Japanese Occupation Medal.
