Profile:

Dr. Hsun Chen is currently a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at California State University, Long Beach. She is also the Undergraduate Advisor for the BSAE program.

Dr. Chen received her BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from National Cheng-Kung University, MS degree in Power Mechanical Engineering from National Tsing-Hua University and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. She joined CSULB in 1985. Dr. Chen is an Associate Fellow of AIAA, an Aircraft Icing Specialist of SAE Aircraft Icing Subcommittee and the recipient of the 1993 CSULB Distinguished Faculty Scholarly and Creative Achievement Award.

Dr. Chen has been involved with research activities in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), including the aircraft icing problem, boundary layer transition and stability, calculation of low Reynolds number flows, and aeroelastic analysis. She has more than 30 years' experience in CFD and FORTRAN coding. Recently, she has been working on a CCDoTT (Center for the Commercial Deployment of Transportation Technologies) project to develop CFD tools with applications in design and optimization of ship hull forms. Work accomplished under this project includes the development of methods and computer programs to solve the nonlinear free surface problem. She has also worked on a drilling process study project funded by the Boeing Company. The objective of this project is to develop analytical tools and a database to design drilling processes and tools for manufacturing industries. Laboratory tests using coupons simulating the C-17 parts have been conducted by students in the Department under Dr. Chen's supervision.

Dr. Chen has published over fifty technical papers since she joined CSULB. She has worked as a Principle Investigator for contracts totaling more than $260,000.
