The CSULB and CECS student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery will send four teams of students to the Southern California ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest this coming Saturday, November 13. The competition will include several universities and hundreds of students from around Southern California.

Friday November 19th is the last date to withdraw from class without the college dean's signature. To withdraw from classes by this deadline, students must complete the petition to withdraw from classes and obtain the approval of the instructor and of the department. Note also, that withdrawing at this point will result in a W which also counts against the limit on number of units a student may withdraw from. Students need to have the most accurate information regarding their standing in a class to make a decision, thus it is important that students have a frank discussion with their instructors and advisor if you are considering withdrawing from class. Students should also review CSULB's policy on repeating courses.

The CSU Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP) for the 2011/2012 academic year]] has been announced. The purpose of the Program is to increase the number of individuals who demonstrate potential as doctoral students and who may be interested in applying for future CSU instructional faculty positions.
The CDI loan is $10,000 per year for three years and forgivable for those with full- or part-time teaching appointments at a CSU campus. Recipients must be CSU employees in order to receive loan forgiveness. Being awarded the CDI loan is not a guarantee of employment at the CSU. Each applicant is required to have a full-time tenure/tenure-track CSU faculty advisor who will provide professional mentoring and networking opportunities throughout the student's educational experience. Applications are available from the Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program website only. The campus deadline for application submission to Brotman Hall is Friday, March 4, 2011. The California Space Grant Consortium will award 30 to 40 undergraduate research scholarships, ranging from $1,500 to $2,000, to students attending its affiliate member institutions, who are pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This competitively awarded program engages the future STEM workforce in basic and/or applied aero/space-related research projects and facilitates the development of mentor relationships between students, faculty, and the NASA Community.
Applicants should carry out their research project at their home institution during the 2010-2011 academic year, with project initiation in the second semester of the academic year. All research projects must be conducted under the general supervision of the applicant's research mentor.

The Department of Energy Scholars Program is now accepting applications for Summer 2011. The deadline to apply is January 31, 2011.
The Department of Energy Scholars Program offers summer internships with stipends of up to $650 per week depending on academic status to undergraduates, graduate students and post graduates at accredited institutes of higher education. Majors accepted include: engineering; physical sciences; environmental sciences; computer science and information technology; physics; program management; math; statistics; safety and health; accounting and finance; law; and other related discipline areas. Requirements include: U.S. Citizenship; 18 years of age or older; and a cumulative GPA of 2.90/4.00. Internships provide participants with the opportunity to conduct hands-on research while showcasing their education, talent and skills. Interns will also have a unique opportunity to explore the options for federal careers with DOE.

The Naval Postgraduate School Center for Information Systems Security Studies and Research (NPS CISR) offers the Scholarship for Service Program which is designed to increase and strengthen the cadre of federal information assurance professionals that protect the government's critical information infrastructure. This program provides scholarships that fully fund the typical costs that students pay for tuition while earning a Graduate Degree in Computer Science. Additionally, participants receive stipends of around $30,000/yr to cover housing and books. The scholarships are funded through grants awarded by the National Science Foundation. In return, the students are required to work for a government agency for 2 years. The program has 100% job placement. The Naval Postgraduate School is located in Monterey, CA, but graduates can work in a city of their choice after program completion.

The Computer Science Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) is inviting applications for its PhD and MS programs (application deadline is December 15th). The PhD positions at UCSB are fully funded by the Department. Each admitted student receives either a fellowship, a research assistantship (RA) or a teaching assistantship (TA), or some combination thereof, to cover his/her living and educational expenses. Students can apply to the PhD program directly after obtaining their undergraduate degrees in computer science or in a related field of science or engineering. MS students are not guaranteed funding but many are hired as TAs and some transition to the PhD program.

Esri is a company that provides geographic information system (GIS) technology. They have several opportunities listed on the Esri University Recruiting website. Each internship is a paid position and will be up to 12 weeks long. The Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP), provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer.
The goals of the NREIP are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of DoN research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN.
The Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) is a ten week summer research opportunity for undergraduate Juniors & Seniors, and Graduate students, under the guidance of a mentor, at a participating Navy Laboratory. The stipend amounts for the program are $7,690 for undergraduate students and $10,250 for graduate students. U.S. citizenship required; Permanent residents accepted at certain labs. New this year, all eligible students who attend an accredited 4 yr U.S. college/university are eligible to apply.

The 2011 Student Airborne Research Program is sponsored by NASA. The National Suborbital Education and Research Center at the University of North Dakota organizes the program for NASA. The program gives a total research experience to the students starting with lectures from university research faculty and NASA staff on all aspects of airborne research, hands on experience with airborne instrumentation, flight experience on a research data flight, sample and data analysis, and preparation and presentation of their research results.
The 6 week program will be run from two locations in California, the University of California at Irvine campus and the NASA Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, CA. The 2010 program included 29 students from 24 universities from all areas of the country. Three outstanding student presentations were selected for presentation at the NASA booth at the 2010 American Geophysical Union's Fall Meeting in San Francisco, CA this December.
