Summary
Urban Science is a consulting firm that strives to help auto manufacturers make the most of their retail sales and distribution channels by providing market analysis and software tools for managing retail networks and customer relationships. Urban Science operates in offices in North America, Europe, and Asia/Pacific region and over the years its client list has included most of the world’s major automakers.
This position will support the delivery of specialized services in our Long Beach office focused on the local client base. This individual will support the client’s use of Urban Science proprietary software products, such as MarketSmarts® and CAMS (Computer Assisted Market Studies). Above all, this person will use technical skills to independently execute high quality data-related projects and assignments in a timely manner.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Will utilize and get involved with solutions from all three Urban Science Practice Areas including Network (Retail Network Optimization), Site (Retail Outlet Optimization) and Customer (Customer Marketing Solutions) including proprietary software solutions aligned with each as well as the technology used in each, including SQL Server, VB6, .NET, and C#.
- Manages databases with client provided data utilizing Urban Science proprietary software such as MarketSmarts®
- Use SQL Server to extract and manipulate data by writing queries, joining data sources, managing tables, using DTS and SSIS packages, etc.
- Create and generate reports that will be distributed to major manufacturer dealer networks to aid them in identifying segment & geographic shortfalls that could lead to incremental sales and improved market share.
- Focus on improving new and existing processes to effectively and efficiently communicate data from various sources such as dealership sales and financials, vehicle registrations, customer satisfaction, demographics, economics, etc.
- Plan, organize, develop and deliver client-requested projects and ad hoc requests within in prescribed time schedule. The client-requested projects and requests will be used to communicate dealership performance to find profit, sales and efficiency opportunities
- Track, process, analyze and verify data using Microsoft products, such as Excel and Access
- Adhere to quality control standards for Urban Science and the client
- Work with, guide and train non-technical temporary workers that will spend time on the Client Services team
- Other duties as assigned

- Needs to have a fundamental understanding of database concepts in order to complete service requests which require gathering and manipulating data manually from multiple databases.
- Needs to have a fundamental understanding of MS Excel for charting and graphing of data, writing formulas within cells, and/or filtering, sorting, and formatting data.
- Ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple concurrent tasks and adapt to changing priorities
- Ability to collaborate, possess team orientation, and have dedication to meeting and exceeding the expectations of other team members
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- College level math skills and solid mathematical grounding required.
- Skills to execute simple statistical analysis software programs and create scatter plots, bar charts and histograms.
- Knowledge of basic descriptive statistics
- Knowledge of relational database fundamentals, including creating and executing queries, creating scripts, importing/exporting data, and manipulating data
- Strong commitment to the Urban Science Mission to provide state-of the art solutions to our customers’ problems worldwide, utilizing scientific problem solving tools and computer technology driven by real-world experiences.
- Oral communication skills necessary to express ideas clearly to individuals and groups, including clients, preferably in English and the local area language
- Written communication skills necessary to effectively communicate ideas in a clear, concise manner at a level appropriate for the audience
- Ability to analyze problems and identify alternative solutions, applying appropriate Urban Science methodology
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Baccalaureate degree in a technical field (engineering, applied math, computer science, applied science, MIS , or other) from an accredited U.S. college or university, or equivalent foreign institution is required, master’s degree preferred
- One to three years of relevant post-graduate work experience
- Knowledge of SQL is required.
- Technical skills necessary to support Urban Science systems. Experience with MarketSmarts®
- and DNAP (Dealer Network Analysis Process) is a plus.
- Microsoft Word, Access and Excel skills required
- Must have demonstrated programming proficiency in SQL. Preferably in .NET, VB6, or C# as well.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Urban Science certification of Apprentice in one practice area is preferred if applying internally
