Profile:

Dr. Sciortino joined the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering Management at California State University, Long Beach in January 2004. She received her "laurea" (B.S.) "summa cum laude" in civil engineering with a minor in Hydraulic Engineering from the Politecnico di Bari, Italy and her M.S. (with distinction) and Ph.D in Civil Engineering, with Water Resources Systems as specialty, from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was a 1996 Fulbright scholar.

Dr. Sciortino's area of expertise is water resources with an emphasis on groundwater processes. Prior to joining CSULB, Dr. Sciortino worked as a visiting researcher at the U.S. Salinity Laboratory in Riverside, California from 1993 to 1995, as a postdoctoral fellow and lecturer at UCLA from 2000 to 2001, and as a visiting researcher and project engineer for Italian government agencies in 2002 and 2003. She holds the Italian professional Engineering license since 1993.

Dr Sciortino's research focuses on groundwater and vadose zone processes with emphasis on numerical modeling. Her area of expertise includes modeling dissolution from DNAPL pools, inverse modeling for parameter estimation, optimization strategies to locate pollutant sources used in forensic contaminant hydrology and to design groundwater pumping. The focus of her recent research is the impact of alternative fuels on subsurface quality. Dr Sciortino is the author and coauthor of several papers in peer-reviewed journals such as Water Resources Research, Journal of Hydrology, Advances in Water Resources and the Soil Science Society of America Journal. She has given numerous presentations to national and international conferences.

Dr. Sciortino received the 2006 AESB "Faculty of the year" award and was nominated for the "Excellence in Mentoring" UCLA-CSU Award in 2006.
