Biotechnology REU at Western Kentucky University March 2, 2012 Thirteen faculty members in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics and Computer Science will serve as mentors to accepted students. Students will be trained in research techniques, participate in exciting research (students can chose from over nineteen projects), and gain valuable presentation skills. Additionally, students will benefit from a series of workshops exploring ethics and preparing students to apply for and succeed in graduate school.
Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) Internship Program in Environmental Studies Deadline(s):
Nov 15, 2012
June 1, 2012

DEADLINE NOTE: The deadline for summer positions (May to August) is February 1. The November 15 deadline is for spring positions (January to May). The deadline for fall appointments is June 1.
The sponsor offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and education. This program enables students to work on specific projects under the direction of the sponsor's professional staff and is tailored to provide the maximum educational benefit to each participant. Projects include terrestrial, atmospheric and estuarine environmental research within the disciplines of ecology, biology, chemistry, microbiology, botany, zoology, mathematics and physics. The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center will consider applications from currently enrolled undergraduate and beginning graduate students, or students who have recently graduated from an undergraduate or Masters program. Applicants must be in a position to commit fully to the completion of a project. U.S. citizenship is not a requirement to participate in this program.
The Stanford Summer Research Program in Biomedical Sciences (SSRP) February 1, 2012 Students join mentoring group led by graduate students or post-doctoral fellows. Weekly group sessions expand studentsí knowledge of scientific fields and guide them in the process of applying to graduate school. The mentors also coach the students on how to present their data and help them polish their presentation skills. In addition to their lab work, students participate in science field trips, graduate education workshops, and social outings.
The Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) February 1, 2012 Program activities: Placement in a faculty-mentored research project, participation in the Leadership Alliance National Symposium, learn professional development skills and build your network
Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) Undergraduate Internships An application should be submitted through the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network site Participants are matched with faculty research groups for their ten-week mentored research internship. Research topics span the whole range of nanotechnology, from developing articial retinas to making carbon nanotube transistors to working on new characterization and fabrication techniques, as well as nanotechnology-enabling projects.
Kansas State University

Research activities in this program under the guidance of faculty mentors, will advance students' state of knowledge in sustainable energy. Students will participate in "hands-on" experiences with processing agricultural biomass, experiencing the physical environment of industrial-scale biomass processing with all its limitations and opportunities. Students will also meet people who actually perform the work to produce renewable energy for the communities where they live.
