Chicano and Latino Studies and Africana Studies: African Cultural Legacy in Latin America

  • Date: March 9, 2013
  • Time: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
  • Location: CBA 140

African culture left an imprint on Latin American social life, especially on its music. Bomba y Plena is one of the various genres of African music in Puerto Rico. Atabey, a southern California drum and dance ensemble, will share its interpretation of  these genres with the Son Jarocho band Son Del Centro. Son Jarocho is musical genre from Veracruz, Mexico, which has deep roots in African musical forms. Both groups are also involved in social movements in Orange County.

This initiative seeks to expose the community to the Chicano/Latino culture and history.
