The Richard and Louise Wilde Student Award Endowment

for The History Teacher

In November 2007, Richard and Louise Wilde made a generous donation to the Department of History within the College of Liberal Arts at California State University, Long Beach that created the Richard and Louise Wilde Student Award Endowment for the History Teacher.  Recipients of the award are chosen by a committee consisting of the Chair of the History Department, the President of the Society for History Education, which publishes The History Teacher, the current editor and the editor to be named for the year the student will serve as the recipient.

Dr. Richard Wilde is an emeriti faculty member of the Department of History at CSULB.  He retired from the University in 1983 but stayed active with the College through his involvement with The History Teacher, the Department’s journal.  Wilde has worked on the journal since its inception in the late 1970's and is currently on the journal’s editorial board.  He is very proud of the journal and mentioned that it is the second most recognized journal in its field (next to William and Mary's Quarterly).  For this reason, Dr. and Mrs. Wilde decided to create an endowed student award that will benefit The History Teacher.

The History Teacher is the most widely recognized journal in the United States devoted to the teaching of history in the secondary and higher education classroom. Published quarterly, it features practical and insightful professional analyses of traditional and innovative teaching techniques.  The Society for History Education supports all disciplines in history education in universities, community colleges, and secondary schools. The Society for History Education is an Affiliate of the American Historical Association.
