The 2007-2008 recipient of the W. Gregory Barrett Memorial Scholarship is Maricela Salcido. Maricela is a native to the Long Beach area and works closely with the Learning Alliance Program as she works towards completing her Bachelor’s degree in the Hospitality Foodservice Hotel Management Program at California State University, Long Beach. Maricela is currently an employee at the Long Beach Courtyard by Marriot where she is receiving valuable on the job experience in her field of choice.
Each year the W. Gregory Barrett Memorial Scholarship is awarded to native Long Beach resident that is either a Freshman or Sophomore student. The student must be involved in the Learning Alliance Program and must not be receiving any type of scholarship or financial aid of any kind. At the end of each semester, the recipient of the scholarship must present a letter that reports his or her academic progress to the donor for verification of his or her continued academic excellence in his or her studies.
The W. Gregory Barrett Memorial Scholarship Award was created by the mother and sister of W. Gregory Barrett after his death on Nov. 9, 1989 at the age of 28. Greg was born and raised in Long Beach and attended Minnie Gant Elementary, College Intermediate, Standard Junior High, Millikan High and CSULB. He studied at the College of Business with an emphasis in Marketing while on campus. Greg’s passions included all types of sports, animals, people and life in general. According to his family members, Greg lived life to the fullest.
