The Spanish Program is the largest in the department of RGRLL and continues to grow. In the Southern California area and beyond, a degree in Spanish is an invaluable one, indeed. The proof is in the statistics:
Spanish Program faculty are well-published in their respective fields, award-winning and dedicated teachers, and exceptionally active in terms of service within the community and university. They are experts in linguistics, culture, literature, and translation studies. Faculty research is frequently multi-disciplinary and involves related fields such as history, philosophy, gender studies, cultural studies, film studies, performance, psychology, and quantitative approaches.
The Department offers a wide range of courses, such as: basic and advanced language classes; surveys of literature, linguistics, and culture; translation and interpretation courses; business Spanish; and advanced classes in literary theory and research methodology. These courses develop important skills such as oral fluency, effective writing, and critical thinking.
A major in Spanish (39 upper-division units plus two years of an additional foreign language) will prepare students for many career opportunities, including court translation, editing, journalism, non-profit work, public relations, and teaching. Students who double major frequently go on to become bilingual journalists, law enforcers, international business people, social workers, medical professionals, and bank executives. The B.A. in Spanish can also prepare students for continued studies at the graduate level while a minor in Spanish figures as natural compliment to almost any major (18 units, 15 of which must be upper-division).
