Before teaching at CSULB, he held lectureships at the University of Massachusetts, the Universität Heidelberg, the University of Minnesota, and continues to teach as Visiting Professor at the University of New Mexico's German Summer School. His teaching focuses on the "Age of Schiller" as well as literary, philosophical and theoretical texts from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Professor High's seminars–“The 'German Novella from Boccaccio to Stephen King,” “Drama of the Late Enlightement,” “A History of Heresy and Witch Persecutions”–teach interdisciplinary approaches to the intersections of literature, philosophy, critical theory, and politics in German, European, and American culture.

Before teaching at CSULB, Nele Hempel-Lamer was an Associate Professor of German and the director of Women’s Studies at the University of Memphis. Her research and teaching interests lie in twentieth-century German and Austrian literature and culture, interdisciplinary feminism and discourses of memory and commemoration.
Favorite seminars include survey courses in twentieth-century drama, post-1945 courses with a special emphasis on works by Gruppe 47 authors, and the special topics course "The Mother Figure in twentieth-century German Literature and Culture." Professor Hempel-Lamer was recognized for her teaching with distinguished teaching awards both at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and at the University of Memphis.
