French and Francophone Studies

Welcome to the French section of the Department of Romance, German, Russian Languages and Literatures, California State University, Long Beach!

French is spoken in over 50 countries as either the first or second language, and in an increasingly globalized workplace, the ability to function in more than one culture is an invaluable asset. Our goal is to help students achieve both linguistic and socio-cultural competency in communicating with members of the Francophone world. We strongly encourage our students to study abroad through our regular exchanges with universities in Paris and Aix-en-Provence, as well as on their own.

Our section fosters highly qualitative, innovative and interdisciplinary teaching and learning in order to ensure the needs for excellence required by our students in the academic and non-academic world. We offer a full range of courses in language, literature, and culture of the Francophone worlds, from elementary language classes to graduate seminars. In the following pages, you will find information about our undergraduate and graduate programs, about our faculty and their areas of expertise, about events such as lectures and symposia, and also about extra-curricular organizations such as the French Club and Zeta Theta (the local chapter of Pi Delta Phi, the French Honor Society).
