Language Coordinator
Dear Students,
Welcome to the Language Coordinator’s page in the Department of RGRLL. My name is Markus Muller and I have been coordinating the lower-division language program since 2001. Our department is one of the very few MA-granting foreign language departments in the CSU system (and nationwide) to offer a complete Teaching Assistant training program. We pride ourselves in giving you the best possible support and training during your career as a language teacher while you pursue you MA-degree. We want you to be fully prepared to either teach at a high school, community college, or in a PhD program. In fact, we have had great success in helping our graduates to find good teaching positions or places in prestigious PhD programs across the country.
If you already know that you want to be a Teaching Assistant (TA), there are a few things to do:
- You will need 3 (three) letters of recommendation preferably from faculty in our department (if you are transferring from another college, letters from your professors/employers there will also be sufficient). Please ask your recommenders to send the letters to the following address:

California State University, Long Beach

- As a TA, you are required to enroll in RGR 601 (Teaching Methodology). This course is offered in the Fall only. In most cases, we recommend that students take this course before being assigned a course to teach in the Spring.
- If it fits your interest and course of studies, you should also consider enrolling in Spanish 424/524 (Second Language Acquisition) during the Spring semester. In some cases, students enroll in this course while they are finishing their BA and then can be assigned a course to teach once they are admitted to the MA-program.
If you would like to find out more about teaching either French, German, Italian or Spanish, please give me a call or stop by my office (985-4323; Office: AS 342). You can also contact one of the advisors/program directors in these languages.
I am looking forward to meeting you.
Sincerely,
Markus Muller
