The Use of Discipline in a Team-Oriented Workforce
The traditional organization (TO) and the team-oriented workforce (TOW) are similar in the goals that relate to the developmental system of organizational discipline. But the formation and implementation of these goals are different between the two structures. The purpose of the study was to identify whether TOW employees would perceive their leaders as taking teaming variables into consideration when making disciplinary decisions, more often than TO employees.
Hourly employees from two medium-sized manufacturing businesses were surveyed. Participants answered questions as to whether they perceived their leader/supervisor as taking into consideration teaming variables when making disciplinary decisions.
Results indicated that, when making disciplinary decisions, employees in a team-oriented workforce, more so than those in a traditional organization, perceived their leaders as taking into consideration the team variables of taking personal responsibility and seeking assistance from the organization.
