Leadership styles and pastoral effectiveness
The leadership styles of 46 church pastors were assessed related to Transformational, Transactional and Nonleadership styles in order to identify the determinants of the three styles and to determine which style brought about the highest level of organizational effectiveness. Personal history, leader behavior and church data were collected to ascertain the determinants and outcomes of the three styles.
No significant relationships were found between personal history determinants and the three leadership styles. No leader behaviors accounted for any significant variance in Transformational leadership, although, in opposition to the hypothesis, some relational behaviors were positively related to both the Transactional and Nonleader styles.
Transformational leadership was not a significant factor in the variance in church growth or in the size of a congregation but Transformational leaders had lay leaders who were significantly more satisfied and saw their pastors as more effective.
