Flight Attendant Illness and Absenteeism: An Exploration and Comparison with Traditional Work Groups
This study explores the incidence of illness absences among airline flight attendants compared with “traditional,” “9-to-5″ type workers. Three chief variables are involved with contributing to flight attendants becoming ill more often than traditional workers: (1) exposure to hundreds of different people each work day, (2) specific stressors, and (3) irregular work schedules. Eighty-two subjects, (41 flight attendants and 41 traditional office staff workers), took part in the study. Eighteen male and 64 female subjects with an average age of 34 completed a two-part survey: questions formulated by the researcher and the published Occupational Stress Inventory by Osipow and Spokane (1987). Two-sample t-tests, all at the.01 significance level, indicated that flight attendants are at greater risk than traditional workers of contracting viral illnesses due to the stated variables. Flight attendant self-awareness of these findings coupled with communication with management and federal legislators are recommended avenues for organizing change.
