Honors, Grants and Awards

Courtney Ahrens has been appointed to one of the inaugural Scientific Review Panels of the National institute of Justice.  Courtney’s panel will be reviewing research on violence against women, including sexual violence, teen dating violence, and stalking.

Cammie Shibata, a current student in our MAPR program and former COR student, was selected as the winner for the Unger-Frieze Prize for best student poster presented at the Association for Women in Psychology Conference in Palm Springs this past weekend.  Her poster was entitled “Building Positive Body Image and Self-Esteem in Adolescent Girls:  Evaluation of a Body Image Prevention Program.”  This poster was based on her master’s thesis project. Courtney Ahrens is her mentor.

Conrad Rorie, whose internship poster entitled “Effect of Force Feedback on an Aimed Movement Task” was selected a best in the Aeronautics Mission Directorate at the recent NASA virtual poster session. He is a graduate student in the Master of Science in Human Factors program.  Conrad presented his poster at NASA Ames by videoconference.   Congratulations to Conrad’s faculty mentors: Dan Chiappe, Jim Miles, Tom Strybel, and Kim Vu.

Chi-Ah Chun was invited to attend a Korean American Community Leaders Briefing at The White House this coming Thursday morning.   To quote from the invitation: “The White House Office of Public Engagement and The Council of Korean Americans invite Korean American community leaders to a briefing on issues of importance to the Korean American community. Participants will have an opportunity to hear from and engage with Obama Administration leaders on issues important to the Korean American community, including U.S. relations with South and North Korea, immigration, human rights, small business, education, civil rights, and trade.”

Sarah Clingan won  CSULB’s Outstanding Undergraduate Research Student Award based on her presentation at the Student Research Competition in the Health, Nutrition, and Clinical Sciences category.  Congratulations go to her mentors, Dennis Fisher for supervising Sarah’s work at CBRS and Chi-Ah Chun for bringing the work to fruition for presentation — and for working with Sarah as part of the COR program.

Congratulations to Bri Vaughan on the occasion of winning CSULB’s Outstanding Graduate Research Student Award based on her presentation at the Student Research Competition in the Biological and Agricultural Sciences category.  Congratulations go to her mentor Diane Lee for supervising her work on cell regeneration in avian brains.

Mindy DeYoung, a grad student working with Hannah-Hanh Nguyen, has won one of two graduate research fellowships awarded to CLA.

Dustin Thoman on the occasion of winning the University’s Early Academic Career Excellence Award.  Dustin will be honored during the university research and achievement awards festival at the Pointe, 3-7 PM Thursday April 19, 2012.

Kim Vu and Co-Investigators Dan Chiappe and Tom Strybel received an award of a one-year $300,000 grant from NASA entitled  ”Unmanned Aerial System in the National Airspace.”

Christina Shin (COR student) who won the Psi Chi Regional Poster Award at WPA.  She presented data that she worked on with Art Zavala during the summer.   Congratulations to Art as well!
