MOOT COURT
HOSTS, WINS AWARDS AND NATIONAL BIDS AT THE 2010 WESTERN REGIONAL MOOT COURT
COMPETITION
This year’s regional was the largest ever
-- 38 teams. The final four was the most diverse we have had: a Patrick Henry
College (PHC), a CSULB, a Holy Cross, and a CSU Fullerton. Although participants
survived rain, computer issues, a loud concert, traffic, a blackout, and threatened
campus evacuation, they also had the honor of arguing before former California Governor
Deukmejian.
The final four included the 6th,
10th, 17th and 20th seeded teams from Friday night. The Sweet 16 included teams
from 7 of the 11 schools: Carroll College, Fresno State, Fullerton, Chapman,
PHC, Holy Cross, and CSULB. Also competing were Drake, Mt St Mary's, Claremont McKena, and Weber State.
PHC's Logan Spena
and Adam Fisher (6th seed) defeated Stephen Simpson and Amy Bailey (10th seed)
from CSU-Fullerton. The other semi-finalists were Jilian
Ewan and Aaron Sibley (17th seed) from CSULB and Erica Rocha and Jeff Lord
(20th seed) from Holy Cross College. This was the lowest seeded team and got on
a major role.
All 5 of CSULB's teams advanced to
the Sweet 16 and 3 made the round of 8. One made the semi-finals. Three—Andrew Klein, Alexandra Lohman, and
Timothy Appelbaum—won orator awards. Moot
Court director Dr. Lewis Ringer expects that the team will have 4 automatic
bids to nationals.
