CSU Long Beach Department of Philosophy

Our department offers opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate study in Philosophy.

Students can study towards the philosophy minor, the philosophy major (B.A.), or a Master’s Degree (M.A.). Undergraduate students can also take advantage of our Departmental Honors Program and our Pre-Law Emphasis.

The department currently has around 175 undergraduate majors and over two dozen students active in its M.A. program.

The areas of specialization for tenured / tenure-track faculty members include:

  • Cognitive Science, Epistemology, Ethical Theory, the History of Philosophy (esp. American Philosophy, Early Analytic Philosophy, and Early Modern Philosophy), Metaphysics, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Religion, and Philosophy of Science.

The department is home to the Center for Applied Ethics, the Cognitive Science Group, and the Center for the Advancement of Philosophy in the Public Schools. It also regularly hosts the California Conference in Early Modern Philosophy.
