Tips for Linguists on General Education

Some GE categories include courses that either count towards the Linguistics major, or relate to linguistics, or relate to careers that are popular among linguistics majors.

Since the GE course list changes, please verify the GE status of each course when you register.

  • Critical thinking (A3)

CECS 100 (Critical Thinking in the Digital Information Age) is the first course in the programming sequence. Programming skills are useful for anyone, and essential for computational linguists. Different sections are taught in different programming languages; Python is probably the most useful for linguists.

Other computer-related A3 courses include IS 100 (Information Technology Literacy) and ETEC 171 (Critical Thinking Using Computer Technology)

  • Life sciences without lab (B1a)

PSY 241 (Psychobiology) would be good background for psycholinguistics.

  • Physical sciences without lab (B1b)

CECS 202 (The Digital Information Age) may be useful for computer skills.

  • Mathematics (B2)

STAT 108 (Statistics for Everyday Life) will help prepare you for LING 301 (Research Methods). Statistics are very important for working in research, language assessment, or computational linguistics.

  • Humanities (C2/C3)

This is usually covered by the foreign language classes you will take for the linguistics major. Unless you test out of those, you don’t need to take any other GE courses in this category.

  • Social Sciences and Citizenship (D2)

This is covered by LING 101 or LING 170. You don’t need to take any other GE courses in category D2.

  • Lifelong learning (E)

This is covered by LING 329. You don’t need to take any other GE courses in category E.

  • Capstones (F)

LING 363 (Implications of Human Language) counts both as a Capstone and a Linguistics elective.

PSY 382 (Introduction to Cognitive Science) is closely related to psycholinguistics.

PSY 327 (Introduction to Human Factors) could be relevant to some kinds of computational linguistics (i.e., projects building systems that humans interact with).

PHIL 401 (Philosophy in Education) could be interesting for those who plan to teach.

There are several Capstones relating to communication, such as COMM 411 (Communication in Conflict Resolution); ANTH 412I (Culture and Communication).

There are also many relating to law, such as PHIL 352 (Philosophy of Law), SOC 342 (Criminology), CRJU 304 (Criminological Theory), AIS 485 (American Indians and the Law), HIST 308 (Law and Civilization), and PHIL 451I (Race, Ethnicity, Gender and American Law). These might be relevant if you’re thinking of going to law school, or into forensic linguistics.

  • Global Issues

This is covered by LING 101. You don’t need to take any other GE courses in this category.
