Alumna profile: Maria Dien
Maria graduated with an M.A. in Linguistics (TESOL option) in Fall 2012.
What is your current job?
Currently I work as an Internship Program Advisor for International Professional Programs through UCI Extension. I help international students get internships as a part of their particular certificate programs. We offer eleven special certificate programs for international professionals. At the end of these certificate programs students have the option to do an internship in the United States. My job is to assist these students with this process.
Has your linguistics major helped your career?
Absolutely. Although I work with international professionals many of my students have the same difficulties that you would expect of any non-native population. When my students try to get jobs or internships in the ‘real world’ linguistic issues can be a barrier. Having a linguistics background has helped me to better understand the difficulties they face and devise courses of action to assist students overcome linguistic barriers.
How would you describe the linguistics program at CSULB?
I think the linguistics program at CSULB is a well-rounded program that offers wonderful specialization options. I also found there to be a great deal of diversity in the program; both diversity of experience and diversity of culture. I think this type of diversity enriches the program.
What advice would you offer to a student currently enrolled in the linguistics program at CSULB?
As soon as you get into the program start thinking about the big picture. Make an appointment with the Graduate Advisor and put a check list together. This should help you to figure out your path and stay on track in the program. You don’t want it to come to your attention that you are missing a course at the end of your program.
