Heloiza Golbspan Herscovitz joined the department of journalism at California State University, Long Beach, as an assistant professor in August 2006.
She is a veteran Brazilian journalist with extensive experience as a reporter and editor for several publications in her birth country, such as the daily newspaper "Estado de S. Paulo" and "Nova," Cosmopolitan’s Portuguese version. Heloiza started in radio, moved on to television, and worked as a press consultant at Ogilvy & Mather in Brazil at different points in her career. Her passion, though, has always been print media.
She was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Florida, where she earned her Ph.D. in Mass Communications in 2000. Her dissertation focused on differences and similarities among American and Brazilian journalists.
Before coming to CSULB, Heloiza taught at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication of Florida International University, in Miami, where she coordinated the only Spanish-Language Master’s in Investigative Journalism in the United States between 2000 and 2003. During this period, she trained Mexican journalists on news-gathering techniques at Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey. Her teaching experience includes two Brazilian universities with prestigious journalism programs: PUC-RS of Porto Alegre, in the early 1990s, and UFSC of Florianopolis, until mid-2006.
She has published several articles and book chapters on newsroom culture, news values, media roles and professional routines. Her current research focuses on web usage by Latin American journalists at work. She is a member of AEJMC and the Brazilian Society of Journalism Researchers, SBPjor.
