Jennifer Fleming

Jennifer FlemingJennifer Fleming teaches mass communication conceptual courses (JOUR 110, JOUR 495, JOUR 312i, JOUR 431, JOUR 415), broadcast journalism courses (JOUR 321, JOUR 382, JOUR 482) as well as general news writing and reporting classes (JOUR 120, JOUR 311).

Her teaching goals are to empower, enlighten and inspire students in mass communication, current affairs and journalism while facilitating the acquisition of life-long learning skills. Her lectures, assignments, exams and class discussions are designed to encourage students to start questioning their own assumptions about mass media and journalism as well their impact on society. She works hard to keep her class examples, scenarios, exercises, assignments and case studies current in hopes of engaging students to think critically about course materials and concepts while fostering an interactive, peer-learning environment.

Her research interests include media literacy, media effects, textual analysis and pedagogy.

Recent awards and achievements include a fellowship from the Radio & Television News Directors Foundation (RTNDF), a SCAC Award from the CSULB Scholarly and Creative Activities Committee and recognition as a “Promising Professor” by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).

Professional affiliations include membership in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) where she is an officer in the Mass Communication and Society division as well as the Broadcast Education Association (BEA), Radio and Television News Association of Southern California (RTNA) and Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA).

Prior to joining the faculty at California State Univeristy, Long Beach, she contributed to some of Canada's highest rated national news and current affairs programs including CTV News with Lloyd Robertson, Canada AM and CTV Newsnet.

She earned her Master of Arts degree in journalism from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada . Her Bachelor of Arts in mass communication was completed at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.
