Chair's Welcome

Raul ReisWelcome to a new academic year at The Beach!

This Fall, the Department of Journalism at Cal State Long Beach is proud to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of CSULB and of the Daily Forty-Niner newspaper!

The Daily 49er was established almost as soon as the University itself opened its doors. For 60 years, the newspaper has provided an invaluable service to the campus community and beyond, being the main source of campus news for CSULB students, staff, faculty, alumni, and administrators, as well as for the surrounding community.

The Department of Journalism is proud to house the Daily 49er, DIG magazine, Campus Connection (a weekly video news magazine) , as well as the 49er’s new Beach News video service. Our publications are stronger than ever, and we’re working to offer students even more real-life media experiences.

If you are one of our students, you already know that our highly dedicated and competent faculty are here to serve you, and to offer you a journalism education that is second to none. If you're a prospective student or parent, you came to the right place. We're looking to the future here at CSULB, and the journalism department is the place to be in 2009, 2010 and beyond.

Our faculty come from some of the best newspapers, magazines, broadcast stations and public relations agencies in the country. Our state of the art computer labs (we have both Mac and PC labs) are equipped with the programs used in newsrooms across the country, so our faculty are able to train the best future media and public relations professionals. We also offer practical courses in public relations as well as print, broadcast and online journalism.

We have strong ties with the media community in Southern California, one of the largest, most diverse and vibrant media markets in the country. Many of our faculty are affiliated with local publications, and most of our almost 3,000 alumni are employed locally. Our students have been very successful at securing internships in some of the best media companies around.

Please take a second to explore our site. Send us an email or come to visit us here in Long Beach. We'll be happy to answer your questions or give you a tour of the department, if you come down here. Enjoy the site!
