CSULB Journalism Professor Donna Wares has written and recently released "Great Escapes: Southern California" just in time for summer.
The book is a collection of exceptional Southern California road trips, from San Diego to the Gaviota Coast, from Catalina Island to the Mojave Desert. You'll find weekend getaways and nature hideaways, places to relax and reinvigorate your creative spirit, even if—especially if—you don’t have time to take a two-week vacation.
The getaways skew toward wild spaces where you can escape the daily grind, even for a few hours, though there also are urban retreats and sanctuaries in some unexpected places. And you'll find passages from California writers such as T. Jefferson Parker, Pico Iyer, Judith Freeman, and D.J. Waldie talking about their favorite spots.
Wares started a travel blog, SoCal So Cool, where she posts news and tidbits, upcoming events, and occasional excerpts.
Wares is the editor of the best-selling anthology "My California: Journeys by Great Writers." She is a book editor who specializes in nonfiction projects and an award-winning journalist who has worked at the Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register, and Miami Herald.
Wares is the co-publisher and editor of CaliforniaAuthors.com. She lives in Southern California.
