LONG BEACH – Journalism students and the Cal State Long Beach community will get a first-hand look at life on the campaign trail and examine the future of journalism on Thursday, April 24 during Journalism Day 2008.
Journalists, bloggers, professors and pundits will debate how blogs are impacting the coverage of everything from national politics to local news during the daylong event at the USU Ballrooms at California State University, Long Beach. The program, sponsored by the Department of Journalism and the USU Program Council, runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lunch at 12 p.m. Students, faculty, and members of the community are invited to attend. A student awards reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. in the Karl Anatol Center.
Los Angeles Times political reporter and blogger Scott Martelle will share tales from the presidential campaign trail at 9:30 a.m. His opening remarks will be followed by a morning panel examining how bloggers are changing the political game.
Joining Martelle on that panel will be L.A. Times political editor and writer Cathleen Decker, Daily Breeze political reporter Gene Maddaus and Herb Sierra, executive producer of En Contexto, a public affairs program for Telemundo. Dr. Christopher Burnett, journalism professor specializing in media law and politics, will serve as panelist and moderator. Burnett is a political commentator and former D.C.-based reporter.
An afternoon panel will examine whether bloggers are killing local news, or enhancing it, or whether local newspapers are killing themselves.
Journalism Department Chair Dr. Raul Reis will moderate the 1 p.m. discussion that will include Press-Telegram Editor Rich Archbold, union organizer Carl Hall, District Weekly Publisher Will Swaim, and Bill Pearl, publisher of the online news site, LBReport.com. Two recent journalism graduates, Jeff Overley and Jennifer Frehn, will give their perspectives on how young journalists can navigate an uncertain local news world.
