May Intersession and Summer session classes from the Department

For information on courses the Department of Journalism will be offering during the May Intersession and the Summer session, click here.

Summer Program in Brazil

Once again, the department will be offering the Summer Study Abroad program in Brazil. This time, a group of students will be going to Belém, in the Brazilian Amazon, to study scientific and environmental journalism. The trip will be part of JOUR 312-I Global News Media, a G.E. Capstone course.

Department of Journalism first at CSULB to use new media server for online video of

2009 Journalism and PR Careers Day

On May 12, 2009, the Department of Journalism at CSULB became the first department on campus to use the new Flash media server.  With the help of Walter Gajewski, multimedia services coordinator at the Office of Academic Technology, the department has made available the full video of Careers Day 2009 available for viewing online taking advantage of the latest technology.

2009 Journalism Day                       

The Department of Journalism hosted its annual Journalism Day on April 28, 2009.  The theme for this year was "Global Media, Global Citizens," with panels discussing both international journalism and international public relations.  The keynote speaker was award winning journalist Pete Fuentes.

Warm and Fuzzy Art

What started as a class assignment becomes a front-page story: CSULB Journalism major Kelley Frances Smith writes for the Orange County Register about Slater Barron, a Long Beach artist who uses laundry lint as her primary art material.

Smith, who was a student in Prof. Peter Larsen's Feature Writing class last fall, found Slater Barron at a local art show, and remembered having met the unusual artist when Prof. Larsen asked his students to come up with interesting characters for a profile story.

Journalism Faculty's Annual Retreat

The Journalism faculty started the new 2008-2009 academic year with its annual faculty retreat on Sept. 5. On the agenda, important discussions about the upcoming re-accreditation process, curricular issues, and the j-department's internal assessment and self-study. Click here to read more.

Daily 49er Online Draws National Attention

Daily49er.com recently attracted national attention by becoming the first university in the nation to launch using College Publisher 5.0. CP 5.0 is a publishing platform and content management system used by more than 500 online college news publications in the country.

Journalism student Shannon Poe scored an interview with Pulitzer-winning author Ray Bradbury, in which the legendary author of "Fahrenheit 451," among other classics, discusses the upcoming closure of used bookstore "Acres of Books," a downtown Long Beach landmark.

Multimedia Crash Course

The CSULB Department of Journalism hosted its first of many professional workshops in June 2008 featuring training in multimedia reporting.
