The Minor

The Minor in International Studies is designed to complement the student’s major by providing a rigorous introduction to the complex interrelationships that exist among societies in the modern world.  It combines the study of international relations, global and development issues and contemporary belief systems with a concentration on a major world area. Because of its interdisciplinary nature, this program emphasizes the ways in which the expertise and methodologies of various disciplines contribute to the understanding and resolution of international issues.

The requirements of the minor focus on 18 units of International Studies coursework which concentrate on the development of practical skills, analytical reasoning, critical thinking, and writing competencies all within an international or global context.  The minor does not require a study abroad but it is strongly encouraged and students would benefit from meeting with the Education Abroad and Internship Advisor.  The minor does require Three Years of Foreign Language or the Equivalent.  This is a competency measure not a unit measure.  Students with existing language skills can start at a higher level or have the requirement waived by the undergraduate advisor if equivalent competency is demonstrated.
