History Department Awards

The Richard and Louise Wilde Award - up to $5,000

Master's students, Credential students and Advanced students are eligible. Student must demonstrate a strong interest in pedagogy, specifically in teaching history.  The successful candidate also receives a year-long student internship with the editorial board of the prestigious journal, The History Teacher, which is published out of CSULB's History Department.

Nicholas Perkins Hardeman Master's Student Award - $1,500

Given to a Master's student in History, who will be continuing in the M.A. program the following fall, in recognition of outstanding academic achievement.

The Xiaolan Bao- Memorial Scholarship - $500

The Xiaolan Bao award is given in honor of Professor Bao, a distinguished historian of Chinese and Chinese-American women. Given for outstanding work by a graduate or undergraduate student in the history of Asian or Asian-American women. Writing sample must reflect this.

Douglas McNeally Award - $500

Given to a student who has performed outstanding service to the history department and demonstrated intellectual achievements required of outstanding history students. Personal statement must reflect this.

Ebell-Heimberger Scholarship - $400

Given to a Master's student or Bachelor's student in history who will be continuing his/her studies in the following fall, specifically for achievement in California History. Writing sample in California History must reflect this.

Jack Chinski Memorial Award - $300

Given in recognition of outstanding work in Holocaust-related studies. Writing sample must reflect this.

History 499 Portfolio Awards - $250

Award for the best portfolio assembled by a History 499 student. Students may nominate themselves or faculty may nominate them. 499 portfolio must be submitted. Spring Semester 2011 portfolios are eligible.

History 301 Portfolio Awards - $100, $75, $50

First, second and third place prizes awarded for the best portfolios assembled by History 301 students. Students may nominate themselves, or faculty may nominate them. 301 portfolio must be submitted. Spring Semester 2011 portfolios are eligible.

Stuart L. Bernath Prize - Usually $200

Awarded for best historical essay by a graduate or undergraduate student.

Eligibility: The History Department supports History Majors at the Undergraduate and Graduate level with these awards. Students may submit work done for any class taken in the 2011/12 academic year.

Application Materials (submit all except portfolio in electronic form)

  1. Application form Awards Application 2012
  2. Academic transcripts (unofficial)
  3. A personal statement (approximately one page about yourself, your work in the History Department, your career plans, and how you would use your award.
  4. Samples of your work (you must submit appropriate samples according to each individual award for which you are applying, and identify them as such in your application packet
  5. Letters of recommendation from faculty (at least one from a history professor)
