Ryan Baker (BA 1999), who teaches history at Bancroft Middle School in Long Beach, was recently named the most outstanding American history teacher in California, and has been nominated for the national title.
Lisa Pinley Covert (BA 2003) is now pursuing her doctoral degree in history at Yale University. The recipient of a five-year fellowship to Yale, Lisa was the outstanding graduating senior of the College of Liberal Arts. At CSULB, she participated in the McNair program and did research in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, for her McNair thesis. Lisa reports that she is nearing completion of her coursework and will be doing her dissertation on San Miguel
We regret to announce the death of Danny Doughterty (BA 1994). Following his graduation, Danny studied in France, and eventually became a professional photographer. He passed away from cancer in October 2004.
Gilbert Estrada (MA 2002) has been admitted to UCLA, UCSD, and USC.
Donna Gough (MA 1999) is working on her dissertation at State University on Social and Cultural Foundations in Education. She reports, “In a nutshell, my research is about neo-conservative philanthropy and the funding of the Culture Wars in American Higher Education during the 1980s and 1990s. I examine specifically how this philanthropy has been used to direct the discourse on the viability of ethnic studies programs using a political economy approach.” Donna ran into CSULB faculty at the April meeting of the Organization of American Historians in San Jose. She was attending in her role as director of a Teaching American History grant for Ohio State University.
Tim Garvin (MA, 2004) has been accepted into the doctoral programs in U.S. history at UCLA and the University of New Mexico. During the current academic year, Tim has worked as a lecturer at CSULB's History Department and at Harbor Community College.
Cynthia Schultheis (BA, 1991; MA, 1994)
earned her Associates of Arts & Sciences degree at Long
Beach City College before
transferring to CSULB in 1988. She received her
B.A. in American Studies with an emphasis in cultural studies in 1991. She
continued on for her M.A. in U.S. History with a minor in Women’s History
which was bestowed on her in 1994. She has thoroughly
enjoyed teaching U.S. History, Women’s History and Comparative Cultures
at our local community colleges for over five years before coming bask as
a staff member at CSULB, and is currently the Assistant Director at CSULB’s Multicultural Center. She
is considered a “walking resource” for students. >She
enjoys helping students with their academic endeavors, problems, and sharing
ideas about academia in general. She is enthusiastic
about multicultural history and art and has initiated art projects at the
MCC. For the International Education Week in 2003,
she and students put together a ‘Peace Tree’ with over 200 paper
hands as the leaves with words of peace in over 12 different languages. The
latest art project is the “Peace and Support Flag” which is on
the MCC’s website: www.csulb.edu/mcc,
as well as displayed in the Center’s Conference Room. Cynthia
is also serving a three-year term as a commissioner on the Presidents Commission
on the status of Women, chairing the Social Events and Issues Committee. She
also serves as an alternate for CSULB’s Staff Council representing Undergraduate
and Graduate Advising and Retention.In 2004,
Cynthia was installed into the Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society
for the work and support she offers daily to CSULB’s international students
at the MCC.“I feel as though I’ve
seen education from all sides:as a college student,
faculty member and staff member and can truly relate to students in whatever
capacity they need.”

Jessica Auck (B.A. 2005) was awarded an Exceptional Student Award by CSULB. In the fall she will begin an MA program in Historic Archaeology at the prestigious University of Bristol in the UK. The program focuses on old world and Britain's colonies in the Carribean the Mediterranean regions. She will probably focus her research on food and diet.
