HDEV 470 FORMS
Sponsor Letter for SPRING 2012
All graduating Human Development students are required to take HDEV 470 Practicum/Seminar, which entails the completion of a 90-hours of work at a practicum site. HDEV 470 is designed for students to explore a career goal in the last year of their undergraduate experience. All students in HDEV 470 must volunteer in a practicum site for 6 hours per week throughout the semester. Practicum sites in Human Development are chosen by the student, with oversight by the HDEV instructor. To gain entry into 470, students must be seniors, with a major in Human Development and have taken all the prerequisite courses (HDEV 250, 307I, 357I, 320, 360, and consent of the instructor.)
Click here to see a list of community agencies that have accepted HDEV 470 interns in the past. You can find out about each of the agencies by going to their websites or phoning/emailing the contact person.
The organizations listed at the top of the internship list (and demarcated with an asterick) are those with whom the Department has an ongoing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) through the Center for Community Engagement at CSULB. We have worked closely with these agencies and CCE to clearly specify the role our student interns play at these host sites, our ongoing working relationships, and, importantly, what professional liability coverage might be provided to interns performing particular duties on the job. In particular, students working at the internship sites with which we have a MOU are covered through the Student Academic Field Experience for Credit Liability Insurance Program (SAFECLIP) which provides professional and personal liability insurance. The program provides indemnity including legal defense costs for university students, faculty members, the university and agency if there is a lawsuit involving injury to others or damage to property while carrying out the duties of the internship. The University is increasingly urging departments to establish these MOUs with internship sites in which students are routinely placed. Doing so helps students, faculty and on-site coordinators better define duties and obligations, as well as the type of insurance coverage provided students who work at internship sites off campus.
Human Development students in HDEV 470 are not obligated to choose these agencies with whom we have established MOUs. In fact, you will note the range of additional organizations with whom students in the past have arranged independent placements. Do note, however, that at this juncture, these independent placement sites may not provide professional liability coverage for student interns working at their agency, and students should select these sites with this reality in mind. Departmental faculty are working to establish more MOUs with this latter category of agencies, and we will update our internship list as these MOUs are solidified. Please contact Dr. Jude Stevenson (jsteven4@csulb.edu) with questions about this matter.
