Advising and Mentoring

Students interested in Human Development should seek early academic advising to design a schedule that will meet their personal career goals. Student typically seek advising at several different points in their college career. First, students meet with the advisor when they want to declare Human Development as their major. Students also meet with the advisor periodically to discuss course selection. Finally, students meet with the advisor to file for graduation. Students must file for graduation one semester before they plan to graduate. Filing for graduation involves completing several documents including the program planner which details the courses you have taken. All of these documents require the signature of the advisor and thus must be completed during an advising appointment.

Undergraduate advising in Human Development is done by appointment; appointments are scheduled online via HDEV website. The undergraduate advisor is Dr. Lauren Rauscher. Students also have ready access to other professors for mentoring and research opportunities. Faculty members in Human Development are involved in many of the formal mentoring programs on campus including the McNair Scholars Program, The University Scholars Program, and Partners for Success. The relatively small class sizes in Human Development allow for more informal mentoring as well. In addition, the faculty of Human Development are active researchers who routinely provide opportunities for undergraduates to work on faculty research projects, supervise independent student research and present research coauthored with undergraduate students at professional conferences.
