Girls on the Run of Los Angeles County (GOTR) is a positive youth development program that promotes physical activity and holistic well-being through an interactive curriculum and running program. The program aims to increase girls’ self-esteem in an effort to reduce potential at-risk behaviors, build strong teams, and become good community members. Certified volunteer GOTR coaches teach the lessons. The group meets after school, twice a week, for three months in local schools or parks and culminates with a 5k (3.1 mile) community event that the girls run/walk.
As an organization that works toward cultural and social transformations to recognize the power of girls and women, GOTR LA fits with our department’s emphasis on community engagement for social justice. Dr. Rauscher serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of GOTR LA and facilitates the collaborations that many CSULB students have with this organization. There are different ways to be involved, such as volunteer coaching, assisting with seasonal curriculum packets, program evaluation, grant writing, and helping with special events. To get involved, contact Dr. Rauscher at rauscher@csulb.edu.
