Day 3: It’s All About the Photos

June 14, 2012

In the morning, we had a very interesting lecture on the hydrology project that some of us will be doing on Kauai. I was very intrigued by this project and really want to participate in it! However, I want to put this project in my professional portfolio for future employers  and I’m not sure if this would be the best project for my future. I think I should do something that uses GIS and remote sensing more, so I have a conundrum with choosing what is best and want I like. I would really like to learn more about the other projects and know roughly what they entail so that it can help me to choose. If that doesn’t happen, I will probably talk to Dr. Lee or Dr. Wechsler before we choose and get their insight on what would be best for my situation.

On another note, after the hydrology lecture, we had two more lectures, one by Dr. Wechsler and the other by Briton. Britons lecture, which was on a program called Ecognition, was okay and I heard others saying that they liked it better than ERDAS. I dont know if I agree or not. I feel like I would need to work with it more to tell.

Dr. Wechsler’s lecture did not go well for me.  First, I was one of the only ones, if not the only one, that had full access to photoscan. But, when I tried to import the 40 photos into it, my photoscan froze. My computer would just not have it with photoscan. I tried it 3 more times and every time it froze. I tried closing every other program, restarting my computer and even waiting it out and still nothing, So, this put me behind in her lecture and I wasn’t able to keep up. This made the homework difficult for me. I was hoping to finish both of the exercises but unfortunately I didn’t. They were both just too long and too confusing for me to keep working on it. Luckily we have until Friday to finish it, so I will finish it by then.

To have some fun, some of the girls and I played some geography trivia. It was a lot of fun! Now I am looking forward to Day 4!
