Day 2

June 13, 2012

I feel that day 2 has created a better picture of what to expect from the program. Dr Carl Lipo gave us numerous handouts defining key concepts, and the lecture was a good insight to what it means to do scientific research. I thought it was very interesting how he described the common sense notion of science where we make observations, create a hypothesis, and then this leads to theory. Scientific research actually begins with theories. The ideas that we have are tested and they lead to better ideas. After our break, Dr. Chris Lee gave a very informative lecture on remote sensing. Some of it was review, but it was a much needed review. The video shown at the end generated more interest and excitement to get going with the field research. I feel that I learned a lot from the exercises presented by Mike Ferris and after completing them I’m feeling a little more confident with my knowledge of and skills in remote sensing. I’m looking forward to learning more and working on the field research.
