The WRL offers the following services free of charge to currently enrolled CSULB students:
Tutors in the WRL can help you:
You and a tutor work side-by-side for 45 minutes, discussing your ideas and your writing, identifying your strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and developing the critical thinking and writing skills that will give you the confidence to become a more effective communicator. Tutors do not "ghostwrite," or conduct research, or co-author papers. And while they also do not edit or proofread papers for students, they will help you develop those skills for yourself.
Tutors in the Writer's Resource Lab are CSULB undergraduate and graduate students interested in helping other students become better writers. They are all excellent writers, and most are preparing for careers teaching writing at the high school, community college, or university level. In fact, some are tutoring and teaching writing courses simultaneously. All of our tutors are required to participate in on-going training so that they are aware of current issues/practices in tutoring and can further develop their skills in teaching writing.

To ensure fair access to the WRL's services, we adhere to the following rules concerning tutoring appointments.
The simple answer to this is any class, as long as there is some type of writing task assigned. The WRL tutors are trained to work with students who are at different grade levels, who are from various academic disciplines, and who are at different stages in their writing development.
If you answer yes to any of these questions, you should visit the WRL. The Lab’s tutors are anxious to share their expertise and help you become a more efficient and effective writer. Any time prior to the actual day an assignment is due is a good time to visit the WRL.
If possible, bring all the writing you have done for an assignment with you to your tutoring session. It also helps to bring along the instructor’s assignment in case it is needed for reference. If you don’t have either of these, it is still OK to visit the WRL. Simply talking about your ideas with a tutor is often all you will need on a first visit.
To make a tutoring appointment, you may call the WRL at (562) 985-4329 or stop by the Lab in LAB-212 during the hours we are open. You are welcome to walk in to see if there is an open appointment slot (all appointments begin on the hour) and a limited number of "drop-in" hours are available each semester. Scheduling appointments in advance, however, is the only way to make absolutely sure you will get a session on a given day.
Voice mail requests for appointments are not honored; however, you can leave a voice mail message if you are canceling an appointment.
Out of courtesy to the staff and to other students, please notify the Lab as soon as possible if you need to cancel your appointment, reschedule for another time, or know that you are going to be late.
