Re/Inventions 2014: Nature Plus-
Call for Papers

REINVENTIONS – CFP

Abstracts Due: February 17, 2014

Re/Inventions is the annual conference organized by the English Graduate Student Association (EGSA) of California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). Our goal is to provide a forum in which graduate students and advanced undergraduates may share their academic research and practice their presentation skills in a conference setting. Re/Inventions chiefly promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement among students from Southern California colleges and universities, but encourages participation from around the globe.

This year, EGSA and the Department of English at CSULB are pleased to feature as our keynote speaker Dr. Ursula Heise, a leading scholar in the field of literary theory and environmental culture in the Americas. As we solicit papers which explore the theme Nature+, we ask scholars to consider what it means to be natural. Potentially germane topics include, (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Ecocriticism and Environmental Studies
  • The Natural World
  • Magical Realism
  • Mysticism and the Supernatural
  • The Gothic Novel
  • The Spectral and the Real
  • The Graphic Novel
  • Superpowers and Superhumans
  • Science Fiction and Film
  • Native Cultures
  • Origin Myths
  • Urban Planning
  • Geography and Text
  • Digital Mapping and GPS
  • Digital Rhetorics and Realities
  • Nature and Technology
  • Biotechnology
  • Human Nature
  • Birth, Death, and the Lifecycle
  • Nature vs. Nurture
  • Transgender and Queer Studies
  • Nature and the Body

While this forum is intended for the presentation of academic papers or projects, a limited number of creative submissions, including creative writing and art installations, will be considered. We also encourage multimedia presentations.

Submit abstracts of 250-300 words along with a current CV to egsa.csulb@gmail.com.

Please note any A/V needs. Presentations should run approximately 12 to 15 minutes.
