MA Economics graduate student, Denise Okamoto, won first place in the Business, Economics, and Public Administration Category at the Twenty-Sixth Annual California State University Student Research Competition. Denise represented CSULB at the statewide research competition, held May 4-5 at CSULB.
Three of our students placed at the campus-wide Annual Student Research Competition in the Business, Economics, and Public Administration Category. First place recipient was MA Economics graduate student, Denise Okamoto. Second place recipient was MA Economics graduate student, Foo Law. Honorable Mention was bestowed upon BA Mathematical Economics & Economic Theory student, Victoria Marsh. The Annual Student Research Competition was held on February 24, 2012.
The department is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011-2012 department awards. Professor J. Richard Powell Award of Merit for Outstanding Graduate Students, Foo Law and Denise Okamoto. The Distinguished Masters Student in Economics is Si Yuan Kuang. The Professor Wallace Atherton Memorial Award for Outstanding Graduating Senior is Nathan Nyquist. Paula Oeurn and Chelsea Redmon are the department's Outstanding Graduating Seniors.
Congratulations to scholarship recipients, Marilyn Vazquez and Sheri Wight. Marilyn Vazquez was awarded the Gene R. Simonson Endowed Scholarship. Sheri Wight was awarded the Ray and Marge Lancaster Scholarship.
Students are named to the President's List when they earn a GPA of 3.75 or above for the semester. Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE) is the International Honor Society in Economics. To qualify for membership, applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and an interest in economics. Students do not necessarily have to be economics majors, but they must have completed at least 12 units in economics with a "B" average or better. There is an initiation fee which entitles the student to a membership scroll and a one-year subscription to The American Economist, the journal put out by ODE. Information and applications for membership are available in the department office.
