Whittier
Description: The City of Whittier began in 1887 when Aquila Pickering, a Chicago businessman, looking for a site for a Quaker Colony, established the Pickering Land & Water Co. The site, some 1,265 acres of Puente Hills and 2,800 acres of land farther east,was renamed Whittier in honor of Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier. The city was incorporated in 1898.
The city may be best known as the hometown of former President Richard M. Nixon, who attended high school, and graduated from Whittier College and practiced law in Whittier. Today, the City of Whittier acknowledges its rich heritage as a community that is based upon respect for the worth and dignity of its citizens.A growing, dynamic and diverse community, it searches for ways of involving its citizens in programs and activities that inspire a sense of personal responsibility and pride.
Both private and governmental initiatives offer opportunities for service that create the conditions necessary, cooperation among members of the community, civic renewal and improvement of the quality of life. The city boasts of its efforts to maintain and improve excellence in delivery of municipal services to the people of the community. In addition, the city and the Redevelopment Agency are working towards the residential and commercial revitalization of the Whittier community.
