Pico Rivera

Description: Pico Rivera traces its beginnings to the 1870s when the Atchison,Topeka & Santa Fe, and Union Pacific railroads completed lines through the area. Economic growth was measured by the success of the district’s citrus, avocado and walnut crops. The city has come a long way since its humble beginnings and its incorporation in 1958 following the post-World War II housing boom.

From 1954 to 1968, the city’s economy centered on a Ford Motor Company plant. Later, that same plant produced B-2 Stealth bombers for the Northrop-Grumman Corporation. The closure of the facility in 2001 resulted in the redevelopment of the prime, 200-acre site with shopping and industrial centers. This redevelopment provided the impetus necessary for Pico Rivera to become the driving force behind regional economic growth.

In the past five years, the city has seen close to $1 billion of new investment in the community, reflected by increases in property values, sales tax revenue, building permits and business licenses. The city’s growth and progress continue to make Pico Rivera a desirable community. More than 70 percent of the city’s housing units are owneroccupied, an indication of the long-term commitment of its residents to the community.

Pico Rivera’s 66,800 residents reflect the community’s strong sense of pride through awardwinning programs and outstanding amenities that include seven major parks, an Olympic-size aquatic center, golf course, skate park, senior center, two libraries, and an acclaimed Centre for the Arts.
