Gateway Cities Census Data

Paramount

Description: Before cityhood, Paramount was home to several dairies and more than 25,000 cows. The city cornered the hay market in the early 1930s, handling some 136,000 tons a year. Early Paramount, then known as Hynes- Clearwater, was known as the “milk shed of Los Angeles” and “the world’s largest hay market.” During this time, cows outnumbered people in the area and sales of Paramount’s alfalfa hay outpaced all other dairy centers in the country.

In 1940, Frank Zamboni, inventor of the icesurfacing machine for skating rinks, opened a rink there. The rink became the training ground for many professional skaters. Businesses, factories and homes eventually replaced the dairies. The city incorporated in 1957. In recent years, Paramount has earned the reputation as a leader in urban renewal due to its use of innovative programs that help both residents and businesses. Awards and commendations have come from local, state and national groups such as the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the League of California Cities, the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Today, Paramount is a dynamic, attractive and well-run municipality characterized by a healthy balance of residential, commercial and industrial developments. Commerce is flourishing due to a businessfriendly environment, business incentive programs, and Paramount’s convenient location.
