Grants may be used to attend Classics conventions or Classics-oriented seminars or programs, purchase materials for specific events or projects or professional development, or pay tuition for taking Latin or Greek classes at a local university. 2. Gratulationes Martha!
A hearty congratulations to Martha Altieri for receiving her Silver Bowl for attending 20 JCL conventions and the Summa cum Laude award for outstanding service to the local, state, and national JCL! Martha received these well-deserved honors at the JCL Convention in Fargo this past July.
Her colleague and friend, Dobbie Vasquez of Menlo School in Atherton says of Martha:
For as long as she can remember, Martha wanted to be a teacher. She used to play school with her little sister by tying her to a chair. Believe it or not, however, when Martha took Latin in high school, her teacher thought she was impossible! In those days in West Virginia, teachers could rap students’ knuckles with a ruler. After two years of red knuckles, Martha dropped Latin.
Today, Martha has 250 students taking Latin at Woodbridge High School in Irvine and probably has the most active JCL chapter in the state – if not the nation, has been an outstanding California JCL State Chair for many years, has served on the National Committee as the Convention Advisor for 10 years, and ran last year’s National JCL Convention with me at Davis. In addition, she is the Executive Director of the North American Cambridge Classics Project. She does all this, yet I have never seen her stressed. She is very organized and encourages all of us by her example.
Gratias agimus Martha!
