Student Learning Outcomes

Objectives: Students completing a BA degree in Communication Studies should be able to:

  • Describe the breadth and depth of the communication studies discipline
  • Effectively deliver oral presentations for various audiences and contexts
  • Demonstrate research skills including the ability to formulate research questions, express original arguments using theory, and interpret various types of evidence
  • Communicate competently in various settings (e.g., interpersonal, group, organizational and public)
  • Engage in critical thinking with regard to message analysis
  • Deliver effective messages based on audience and context
  • Explain the role of communication in the formation of individual and cultural identities and how those identities influence communication

Objectives: The MA in Communication Studies is designed to:

  • Introduce students to the history and diversity of the communication discipline
  • Provide in-depth instruction in the major theories at the foundation of the communication discipline
  • Develop students’ critical reading and writing skills
  • Train students to collect, analyze, interpret, and present data
  • Develop students’ competencies as instructors in higher education
  • Develop students’ understanding of key communication skills necessary for leadership and participation in diverse communication settings
