Service Learning in the Dept.!
When Dr. Valerie McKay teaches Comm 307, Measurement in Communication Research, she includes a service learning project to benefit the surrounding community. This semester, her CSULB students col-laborated with Mr. Dave Fujiyama's AP Environmental Science students from Bolsa Grande High School to assist the Gray Whale Education and Preservation Foundation in collecting data on Gray Whale migrations off the local coast. Comm 307 students learning about research methods observed the "whale watchers" to assess whether “hands-on interaction” with nature can transform High School science students into responsible protectors of the environment in which they live.
Dr. Kevin Johnson’s Comm 335, Persuasive Speaking classes recently completed two case competitions. In the first case competition, students pitched their ideas to business owners involved in a joint venture to help gain public support for the construction of an FM radio antenna that would help reach 200,000 Spanish speaking listeners in the Inland Empire. In the second case competition, students pitched their ideas to the owners and general manager of the Long Beach Roller Derby in order to assist in the public relations campaign for “the Gals” (the all-star team of the Long Beach Rolelr Derby League). Winners were selected for an internship with the promised potential of being hired full-time by the league.
