SUMMER STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN VIETNAM

(June 17 – July 22, 2013)

Vietnam Flyer and Application for Summer 2013

In cooperation with the Center for International Education at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies will offer a short-term study abroad program in Vietnam. The objectives of the Summer Study Abroad Program in Vietnam are: (1) to provide CSULB students with affordable opportunities for international education; and (2) to enable participants to substantially improve their Vietnamese proficiency by being immersed in the Vietnamese language and culture for three weeks at two major national universities in Vietnam. We have made arrangements to hold this program in collaboration with the VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from July  to July 22, 2013, and will send approximately twenty CSULB students who are at or above the intermediate level in Vietnamese proficiency, accompanied by Professor Chuc Van Bui. These students must have or will have completed VIET 111 and VIET 211 Accelerated Vietnamese, which are equivalent to two years of regular Vietnamese courses. This program is designed for those who speak Vietnamese fairly well, but need to improve their reading and writing skills, as well as enhance their understanding of Vietnamese culture.

Participants will enroll, with the instructor’s permission, in A/ST 490 Special Topics: Advanced Vietnamese (3 units) during a special summer session. They will begin coursework at CSULB during the first two weeks of a special summer term, and then go to Vietnam for a three-week Vietnamese immersion program at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Students will take three hours of formal classes every morning and participate in cultural activities and field trips every afternoon, accompanied by Vietnamese faculty and students at these universities. Building language confidence is the focus of this program, and there is no better way to acquire functional linguistic skills than to interact on a daily basis with local university students. CSULB students will have the opportunity to discover Vietnam, substantially improve their Vietnamese proficiency, make life-long friends, and expand their horizons. All classes and activities will be held in Vietnamese. The participants will receive from CSULB three upper-division credits in Asian Studies. All students will live together under the supervision of Professor Chuc Van Bui at affordable hotels secured by the two universities. Since meals are very inexpensive in Vietnam, students can eat well for $10 a day.

LONG-TERM STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN JAPAN (NARA)

2013-14 Study Abroad Program in Japan

Tenri University

September 2013 – July 2014

Tenri Application 2013-2014

Tenri University Language Courses

In cooperation with the Center for International Education, the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at California State University, Long Beach, will offer a yearlong International Exchange program at Tenri University (TU) in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture, Japan. TU is close to Kyoto, Osaka and Kansai International Airport. The City of Nara, the capital of Nara Prefecture, was the first Imperial capital of Japan (710 – 784 A.D.). Eight temples, shrines and ruins in Nara, including Todaiji, Saidaiji, Kofukuji, and Kasuga Shrine, are collectively designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nara, Kyoto, and Osaka are ancient cities extremely rich in Japan’s historical, cultural and artistic heritage. The third largest economy in the world, Japan with its unique history and culture will serve as an ideal place for our students to have valuable international educational experience.

In addition to an intensive Japanese language program, CSULB students will take four English-taught content courses (two per semester) on Japan: (1) Japanese History; (2) Japanese Culture and Society; (3) Japanese Religions; and (4) Japanese Anime. Since the Japanese courses are quite rigorous at TU, applicants should have either completed three years of college-level Japanese prior to going to Japan, or acquired equivalent proficiency in Japanese. Students who have native fluency in Japanese may take regular TU courses taught in Japanese.

Because TU has subsidized off-campus apartments (¥20,000 {$268} per month including utilities) for all international students, CSULB students will be able to live and study in Tenri substantially more inexpensively than in other major Japanese cities.

ESTIMATED BUDGET

The per-student program cost at Tenri University is itemized as follows:

1. Airfare to and from Japan $1,500

2. Apartment 2,600

3. Food and Spending Money 9,000

4. Books and Transportation 2,000

Total Cost $15,100

*The estimated budget does not include CSULB tuition. The total cost of the program may vary depending on airfares, fluctuating exchange rates and personal life style.

Completed applications should be submitted to the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies (FO3-340) by March 8, 2013. For further questions, call (562) 985-4645.

LONG-TERM STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN JAPAN (OSAKA)

Study Abroad Program in Japan

Osaka Gakuin University (September 2013 – July 2014)

( Temporarily suspended until Osaka Gakuin University can send us their exchange students.)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

In cooperation with the Center for International Education, the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at California State University, Long Beach, will offer a year long International Exchange program in Osaka, Japan at Osaka Gakuin University (OGU). OGU is located only thirty minutes from Kyoto, the cultural center of Japan; ten minutes from the downtown hub of the Osaka business and entertainment district; forty minutes from Kobe, one of the world’s leading trading ports; sixty minutes from Nara, the oldest historical region of Japan, and about two and a half hours by Shinkansen (Bullet Train) from the nation’s capital, Tokyo.

The International Center at OGU is committed to providing international exchange students with a “life-changing” authentic Japanese experience that they will be able to build upon after leaving OGU. The goal of the program is to offer unique educational opportunities and experiences for international exchange students coming to study at OGU. Through education and “hands-on” experiences, the OGU program is designed to foster first-hand language acquisition, intercultural respect and awareness, cross-cultural understanding, and lifelong friendships between Japanese and international students. OGU has one of the most progressive, practical and unique Japanese Studies programs in Japan. Students take 16-18 hours of coursework per week each semester. This includes 10-12 hours of Japanese language instruction in the morning and 6 hours of classes taught in English on subjects related to Japan and Asia.

For a list of classes and descriptions click here

Students taking part in the program stay with a host family each semester and pay ¥50,000 ($600) per month. In contrast to many other Japanese study abroad and exchange programs, living with a Japanese host family in a long-term home stay living arrangement is considered to be one of the most valuable experiences while studying at OGU. The long-term home stay offers the unique opportunity for international students to gain invaluable experience and insight while observing, living, and understanding Japanese daily life and customs.

ESTIMATED BUDGET

The per-student summer program cost is itemized as follows:

1. Airfare to and from Japan $1,300

2. Home Stay Cost 6,000
