In cooperation with the Center for International Education, the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at California State University, Long Beach, will offer a short-term study abroad program in Taiwan in conjunction with Summer Session II. The objectives of the Summer Study Abroad Program in Taiwan are: (1) to provide CSULB students with affordable opportunities for international education; and (2) to enable participants to substantially improve their Chinese proficiency by being immersed in the Chinese language and culture for four weeks at Ming Chuan University in Taipei, Taiwan. Students will enroll in either Chinese 201 or Chinese 301, and will begin coursework at CSULB during the first two weeks of Summer Session II, and continue their studies in Taiwan from approximately July 4h through July 31st.

This unique program will provide an opportunity for CSULB students to experience Taiwanese culture through field trips and local attractions. Language courses in Mandarin will emphasize the subjects of daily life to train students to develop their basic abilities in listening, speaking, reading and writing.  By interacting and practicing in the classroom, with local and international students, and participating in various cultural activities and tours, students will have the opportunity to apply in-class lessons to real-life situations within the community. Cultural components of the program include: Chinese calligraphy, basic techniques of Chinese Kung-fu, seal-cutting, and Chinese knot-tying, National Palace Museum, Shiling Night Market, and Hakka culture day trip featuring glass-blowing and homemade le tea.

SUMMER STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN VIETNAM

In cooperation with the Center for International Education, the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies will offer a short-term study abroad program in Vietnam in conjunction with Summer Session II at California State University, Long Beach.  The objectives of the Summer Study Abroad Program in Vietnam are: (1) to provide CSULB students with affordable opportunities for international education; and (2) to enable participants to substantially improve their Vietnamese proficiency by being immersed in the Vietnamese language and culture for three weeks at two major national universities in Vietnam. We have made arrangements to hold this program in collaboration with the VNA University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi and Saigon, Vietnam, from approximately July 6 to July 27, and will send approximately twenty CSULB students who are at or above the intermediate level in Vietnamese proficiency, accompanied by Professor Chuc Van Bui.  These students have or will have completed VIET 111 and VIET 211 Accelerated Vietnamese, which are equivalent to two years of regular Vietnamese courses.  This program is designed for those who speak Vietnamese fairly well, but need to improve their reading and writing skills, as well as enhance their understanding of Vietnamese culture.

Participants will enroll, with the instructor’s permission, in A/ST 490 Special Topics: Advanced Vietnamese (3 units), in Summer Session II.  They will take intensive classes at CSULB in advanced Vietnamese and Vietnamese culture in the first two weeks of the second summer session, and then go to Vietnam for a three-week Vietnamese immersion program at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi and Saigon.  Students will take three hours of formal classes every morning and participate in cultural activities and field trips every afternoon, accompanied by Vietnamese faculty and students at these universities.  Building language confidence is the focus of this program, and there is no better way to acquire functional linguistic skills than to interact on a daily basis with local university students.  These CSULB students will have the opportunity to discover Vietnam, substantially improve their Vietnamese proficiency, make life-long friends, and expand their horizons.  All classes and activities will be held in Vietnamese.  The participants will receive from CSULB three upper-division credits in Asian Studies. All students will live together under the supervision of Professor Chuc Van Bui at affordable hotels secured by the two universities.  Since meals are very inexpensive in Vietnam, students can eat well for $7 to $10 a day.
