Certificate/Minor Program

A certificate program is a coherent grouping of courses from one or more disciplines. Such a program may provide an application focus in a particular field of study, or a multidisciplinary focus on a specific topic or area. A certificate provides formal recognition by the University that the course of study involves substantial exposure to the field or topic. The Certificates offered in Asian American Studies, Asian Studies, and Japanese will be awarded concurrently with the Bachelor's Degree and after completion of an approved programmatic check by the Undergraduate Advisor, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, and the Records Office. Courses taken to meet the requirements of the certificate programs offered by AAAS may also simultaneously be used, where applicable, to meet General Education requirements of cooperating departments. Students should be aware that they must pass the Writing Proficiency Examination before the Certificate can be awarded, and that certain limitations (no more than one-forth of course-work applied to the Program) apply to the use of extension and/or transfer credit taken outside CSULB. Interested students should consult the department office.

Certificate in Asian Studies

A student may earn a Certificate in Asian Studies with a concentration on either China, Japan, India or Southeast Asia. Where applicable, courses used to meet the certificate requirements also may be used to satisfy the General Education requirements and the major and teaching minor requirements of the cooperating departments.
  1. A student may earn a bachelor's degree with a major in a discipline other than Asian Studies. Normally, this degree is completed concurrently.
  2. A minimum of two (2) semesters or its equivalent of an approved Asian language that is selected in accordance with the area of concentration.
  3. All students must take A/ST 300I (Traditional Asia) and A/ST 301I (Modern Asia).
  4. Twelve (12) units of upper-division course work divided among two or more disciplines. These are to be selected in accordance with the area of concentration and in consultation with the student's advisor. No more than six (6) units in any one discipline shall apply towards the Certificate.

Certificate in Asian American Studies

Students pursuing any approved degree or credential degree or credential program of the University may at the same time earn a Certificate in Asian American Studies. Courses taken to meet the requirements may simultaneously be used, where applicable, to meet General Education requirements or the degree or credential requirements of cooperating departments. Certification of successful completion of requirements will be issued upon the recommendation of the Department Chair.
  1. A bachelor's degree with a major other than Asian American Studies. May be completed concurrently;
  2. A minimum of 30 units distributed as follows:
      3. a. ASAM 200 or 319, 220, 260, or 310, 345, 370 (required), plus
      b. additional courses selected from: ASAM 330, 331, 332, 333, 334, 335I, 340, 347, 352, 380, 381, 490, and 499.

Certificate in Japanese

The Certificate Program in Japanese offers students an opportunity to develop spoken and written competency in modern Japanese, and to acquire a board introduction to various aspects of traditional and modern Japan. The program is designed for students who intend to pursue a career in the private or public sectors, for which knowledge of Japan and the command of the language is useful or necessary, and also for students who intend to pursue a graduate program in which such knowledge and competency are required.
  1. A bachelor's degree in a discipline other than Japanese (may be earned concurrently with the Certificate);
  2. Fifteen (15) units of upper-division level Japanese language courses;
  3. Twelve (12) units of Japan-related upper-division course work from at least two (2) disciplines. These units may be drawn from units earned as an Asian Studies major, but must be approved by the Undergraduate Advisor.

Certificate/Minor in Asian American Studies

A minimum of 22 units which must include: (a) Asian American Studies 200 or 319, 220, 260 or 310, and 345; and (b) nine units selected from among the following: ASAM 330, 331, 332, 333, 334, 335I, 340, 345, 347, 352, 370, 380, 381, 490, and 499.
