28 September 2009

Minutes

Attending: Larry Martinez, Mike Blazey, Bill Grissom, Hicks Marlowe, Suzanne Wechsler, Carl Lipo, Seiji Steimetz

Fact Report – Larry Martinez

Nothing to report – no meeting yet this semester

Big bombshell is that we are not going to Angel.

Meeting in the next 2 weeks.

Agreement signed for another year for Beachboard

Moodle – hosting services? Need to find out where we are.

Centralized data storage update (Bill Grissom)

CLA bought 6 terabytes of space to allocate out for centralized storage for faculty and staff.

Hoping to get 10-20 gigs for faculty and staff.

Was to be ready this summer. Met with ITS – were going to develop a Service Level Agreement (SLA).

June – storage has been put on hold. Not clear why. AVP Janet Foster (DAF) and AVP Don Gardner (AA) – some confusion over who does what.

Project now back on track – nothing started again until August.

RAID array – striped for redundancy

Shadow Copy – allow incremental backup.

Virtualized server.

Getting close. Maybe by next meeting.

Move folks from who were on Campus-NAS to new disk.

Mac infrastructure – discussion with OAT

Note: we need a mac infrastructure – or an infrastructure that allows the same degree of control as Windows.

What are College SLAs?

i. Server side management

ii. Pass through authentication

Should be provided by OAT – to support Mac and Windows

Web support group update

Web support group formed – Not representative of faculty – very IT/administration focused.

i. Goal to come up with content management system. Budget cut issues.

Current Dreamweaver/Contribute – client side

Need more web-based, defined roles, access privileges.

COTA has made contact with someone who is doing demo on Thursday.

i. We are just trying to push it.

We need to continually push centralized providers

Email/calendar/collaboration suite/strategy

At one point in time they were going to Exchange.

Now looks like we will move to Google Mail. Concerns over security – but not clear that this is an issue given their SLA. However, they offer a Google Enterprise Edition. Disk space.

Email would be @csulb.edu

CSU has signed a master service agreement. So campuses can move forwards.

Confusion about who is leading what – students first?

Information Technology Leadership Council – formed – Janet, Don, Bill, Praveen Soni, Mike Costa (note: basically no faculty from the Colleges).

Need representation of faculty at these administration committees

Talk to Chair of Academic Senate – Praveen Soni — about issues self-governance – representation – openness in terms of these ad hoc and non-representative committees.

i. Why are committees being formed by administration that have no faculty representatively?

ii. Are these committees open? Posting minutes? Posting agenda? Meeting times?

Computer Refresh:

Current Policy is to do replacement every 4 years.

We don’t know if we are getting BATS funding this year.

Discussion about applications and prioritizing refreshes.

With the introduction of the possibility of developing iTunes U. podcasts, the issue of intellectual property and its relation to open access types of publications was raised at today’s CLA Technology Committee meeting. At the meeting, I had mentioned that the Harvard faculty had adopted an “open access” policy. Having faculty provide the initiative in this kind of endeavor is essential – since it affects the way we encourage student and review faculty performance. It would a great thing to start a discussion about this issue on campus given our public status and mission to improve communities. Here are some resources on OA: Chronicle of Higher Education Article on the Harvard Policy: http://chronicle.com/news/article/3943/harvard-faculty-adopts-open-access-requirement Faculty Policy at MIT http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2009/open-access-0320.html Financial Viability of Open Access Publishing http://publishingarchaeology.blogspot.com/2009/03/financial-viability-of-open-access.html A Field Guide to Open Access Publishing http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/newsletter/04-02-09.htm Open Access New Feed http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/fosblog.html UC Berkeley to Pay 100% of fees for open access publishing: http://blogs.openaccesscentral.com/blogs/pmcblog/entry/uc_berkeley_to_cover_fees Cal state open access publishing in Physics http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/2009/04/cal-state-moves-toward-joining-scoap3.html

Attending: Michael Blazey, Ed Funkhauser, Konsura Gerumaareki, Chrisotpher Karadoj, Carl Lipo, Larry Martinez, Seiji Steimez, Dustin Thoman, Suzanne Wechsler

Minutes By: Carl Lipo

1.     New Beachboard (Larry Martinez )

a.     This system will be called Beachboard 2.0 though it will run on the Angel learning management platform.   – 2.0 (Angel).

b.     The system is reported to be much better than the existing Blackboard based system.

c.     Transfers of course material from Beachboard 1.0 -> Beachboard 2.0 is supposed to be simple (basically requiring an export from Beachboard 1.0 and import into Beachboard 2.0).

d.     Personnel at the Technology Help Desk will be trained to help faculty transfer courses

e.     The Help Desk staff will be the primary point of contact for all questions related to Beachboard 2.0.

f.      Effort is being made to make sure the initial startup and implementation will be smooth.

g.     Contact Leslie Kennedy ( lkennedy@csulb.edu ) (she is leading implementation) to volunteer to use early

h.     Information on implementation plan and schedule is available here: http://www.csulb.edu/lats/itss/angel/index.shtml

i.      There is a 12 month timeline – and we are currently in month 4 of that timeline.

j.      Initial testing rollout will occur in the summer ’09.  Full rollout in the fall.

k.     The first semester will have “dual” systems (Beachboard 1.0 and Beachboard 2.0). By spring, the rollover will be complete.

l.      Nonstudent (e.g., alumni accounts are possible in this new system).

m.   Assigned time has been given to a number of “Angel Gurus.” These are listed here: http://www.csulb.edu/lats/itss/design/elearn_consultants.html  For CLA our “guru” is Marc Simoes (msimoes@csulb.edu, 5-4261), lecturer, Dept of English.

n.     Faculty should get ready for this change – perhaps by testing over the summer or creating groups for sharing documents, etc.

2.     iTunes U: Podcasts (Larry Martinez)

a.     Walter Gajewski ( gajewski@csulb.edu) INSTRUCTIONAL MULTIMEDIA COORDINATOR in Academic Computing Services, is prepared to assist faculty who would like to create and post podcasts of lectures for iTunes U.

b.     The iTunes U initiative allows universities to share lecture content.

c.     This brings up issues of intellectual property and about open access publishing (in its other forms as well).

d.     Students need to be trained in fair-use of electronic resources. Perhaps this could be included in University 100 training.

3.     Computer based testing centers (Larry Martinez)

a.     Larry Martinez and Bill Grissom have prepared two classroom in SSPA building (206/207) to serve as computer test areas.

b.     Using Insite software on computers in the Social Science/Public Administration (SSPA) building (rooms 206/207) running Insight (http://www.faronics.com/html/Insight.asp ) to lock down computers – shut down USB ports and internet access.Â

c.     Allows instructors to provide facilities for online tests or computers for type-written essays.

d.     Could eventually develop testing centers across campus.

e.     Current rooms have ca. 50 workstations.

f.      Scheduling of rooms for exams is coordinated by Nancy St. Martin (stmartin@csulb.edu) Office Manager, Political Science.

4.     Computer Refresh (Mike Blazey)          Â

a.     Computer refresh for faculty and staff is proceeding (Bill Grissom leading)

b.     Trying to get to a 4-year cycle for replacements.

c.     Targeting key staff people (e.g., ASCs) for computer replacement.

d.     Discussion about how to prioritize computers – more to come.

5.     Web support group – (Mike Blazey)

a.     Content management a big issue: solutions are being considered.

Â

Meeting adjourned 12:00PM

So if anyone else is wondering, it *is* down.

Would anyone else like to be able to get these kinds of things fixed on the weekends — when most of us might find time to communicate with colleagues via email? Would you like to have Campus Tech Services provide a status report for outages on the web page? Or a call-in number?

One of the easiest way to get the posters to us so that we can print them is to have you or your students FTP them to the serverwww.csulb-cla.org using the login: posters and password: posters

FTP is an old internet protocol for moving files from one computer to the other. The advantage of FTP over email is that multiple large files can be moved without clogging inboxes. If you are not familiar with FTP, the College of Business has a great tutorial on how to use it. You can find this at: http://www.csulb.edu/colleges/cba/it/tutorials/wsftp.html

Academic Technology also has a good set of instructions for FTP:
http://www.csulb.edu/divisions/aa/academic_technology/thd/account/website/

Also this web site has some useful tips:
http://www.csulb.edu/~athomaso/ftpnotes.htm

Chrys Rodrigue has some useful FTP instructions on her page (at the bottom) on creating and editing HTML files:
