Eligibility

Are we for you?

The Learning Alliance is an academic learning community that offers freshmen with a major in the College of Liberal Arts a "small college atmosphere" through personalized attention from peer mentors and faculty interested in first year student success. In partnership with faculty, administration, and students, we've designed a learning community that provides you guaranteed general education units and makes your transition to university life a positive and academically successful one.

Are you a first-time freshman with a major in the College of Liberal Arts - or are you Undeclared and leaning towards Liberal Arts? Would taking a pair of in-demand GE classes taught by quality instructors interest you? Want to form lasting friendships with other first year students? Then the Learning Alliance may be for you.

Test Scores

We accept freshmen at all levels of English placement. You are eligible if your test scores or the Early Assessment Program (EAP) place you in one of the following groups:
    • English 1 (Writing Skills Course): SAT Verbal less than 550 (or ACT English less than 24) AND EPT score of 139-147
    • English 100 (Written Composition): SAT Verbal - 550 or greater
OR EPT - 148 or greater OR ACT English - 24 or greater OR EAP English Exemption
    • Critical Thinking or Communications: AP English Language or Literature - 3 or greater

Make sure your test results for the SAT and ACT have been sent to CSULB Enrollment Services, and if you need to take the EPT that you do so as soon as possible. Without these results we cannot verify your placement, which will delay your admittance to the program.

Advanced Placement/Community College Credit

If you have Advanced Placement (AP) credit, International Baccalaureate (IB) credit or Community College credit from high school, be sure to have your AP scores and college transcripts sent to CSULB. Please send a copy of any AP or IB scores you have with your Learning Alliance application.

Students participating in the Learning Alliance will also enroll in an additional 1-unit course their first semester. This course serves as an orientation to the services offered at the University and our community, as well as a vehicle for fall freshmen mandatory academic advising.
