What is the Learning Alliance?

The Learning Alliance is an academic learning community that offers freshmen a "small college atmosphere" through personalized attention from peer mentors and faculty interested in first year student success, along with academic advising, and encouragement to become involved in university and community life. In partnership with faculty, administration, and students, we've designed a learning community that provides you guaranteed general education units and makes your transition to university life a positive and academically successful one.

Joining Our Community

Our academic community currently has a population of more than 800 continuing students, and every year we welcome a new class of 200 - 250 first-year students - hopefully we will be welcoming you into our program next year!

Step 1: Applying to CSULB

The first requirement to being accepted into the Learning Alliance is to be admitted to California State University, Long Beach. Only matriculated CSULB students will be considered for the Alliance. While you wait for a response from CSULB, be sure to add yourself to our mailing list by calling the Learning Alliance at (562) 985-7804 or sending us an email at alliance@csulb.edu. We will mail you information and an application when they become available.

Once you receive your CSULB Acceptance Letter, you may submit your Learning Alliance application. Applications for Fall 2008 will be available beginning in April 2008.

Step 2: Applying to the Alliance

Although we would love to welcome every student that applies, we have limited space in our program. Therefore, students are accepted on a FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED basis. Applications are available beginning in April and students are encouraged to submit early.

If the Learning Alliance sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, and you meet our criteria listed above, please contact us. We will add you to our mailing list for an application and on-going informational material. Students accepted into the Learning Alliance will enroll in classes through the SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising and Registration) program, which runs from June through August.

Step 3: SOAR and Registration

What is SOAR? SOAR, which stands for Student Orientation, Advising and Registration, is the university's mandatory orientation program offered to all incoming CSULB freshmen the summer before their first term. When you attend SOAR, you will receive an introduction to the following:

  • Basic Requirements to fulfill your university degree
  • General Education (GE) and declared major classes
  • How to construct your personal class schedule
  • Campus resources and services available to all students

On the day you attend the SOAR program, staff from the Learning Alliance will meet you and answer any questions you may have. The Learning Alliance works in conjunction with SOAR. During the morning, the SOAR program will present you with an introduction to university requirements, policies, and procedures. After lunch, Alliance staff will escort you to our office and provide you with specific academic advising as well as assistance registering for your classes. At the end of the day, you'll be all set for your first semester at CSULB!

For orientation dates and registration information, see the SOAR website.
